Criada por Escritura Pública Notorial, em 11 de outubro de 1962, a fundação Geraldo Corrêa foi instituída pelo empresário Geraldo Corrêa e pela Ordem Hospitaleira de São João de Deus. Com a sua ajuda e o seu empreendedorismo, estava realizado o sonho do Ir. Diamantino Ferreira e do provincial, I. José Joaquim Fernandes, que visitaram a cidade em dezembro de 1961 para conhecer as necessidades da região "em termos de hospitais". Do encontro entre os dois irmãos hospitaleiros com o Sr. Geraldo Corrêa, nasceu a Fundação Geraldo Corrêa. "Após alguns encontros e desencontros com diversas pessoas, chegamos ao escritório do generoso Geraldo Corrêa, que nos recebeu com toda amabilidade e disse: "Foi a Providência Divina que vos trouxe aqui"". A primeira reunião da Fundação ocorreu em 3 de janeiro de 1963, quando foi eleito e tomou posse o seu primeiro presidente, Irmão Diamantino Ferreira, que exerceu o cargo por vários mandatos. A Fundação Geral Corrêa é pessoa jurídica de direito privado,de caráter beneficente e assistencial, sem fins lucrativos, com sede e foro em Divinópolis(MG). A instituição tem como objetivo principal a gerência do Hospital São João de Deus e a promoção da saúde com excelência e proveito humano.
