Engineers Without Borders - Detroit Professional Chapter

The Detroit Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to build a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs and equip leaders to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. We currently have four international engineering projects - two in El Balsamar, El Salvador and two in Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua. EWB is not just for engineers! We need many skills to round out our chapter. Our chapter provides an outlet to people who want to make a difference in this world. Whatever your skills are we would like to talk with you about how you can get engaged with our chapter and help make a difference.

Blue Heron Foundation

Our foundation provides college scholarships to abandoned teenagers in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Since 2003 we raised over $1,400,000 from 1,000 friends and friends of friends who have become annual donors. The founders have always covered all administrative expenses so that 100% of all external donations can straight to the end beneficiary. Since 2005, we awarded 280 scholarships and 170 of our students have graduated by now. We are proud to see many of them continue their graduate studies and some of the more entrepreneurial ones starting do donate back to the foundation. Through our mentorship program and the summer self-improvement camp, we help our scholarship recipients secure good jobs in the marketplace.

AWAKE: Alliance of Women Achieving Knowledge and Excellence

AWAKE, the Alliance of Women Achieving Knowledge and Excellence is a non-profit organization created by professional women, for professional women, to encourage cross-promotion, professional leadership, and community leadership. AWAKE seeks to bring women from across professions together so we can support each other and learn from each other. By encouraging women to utilize and support other women, AWAKE also hopes to change industries by demonstrating that hiring and advancing women in the workplace is good for business. What do we want to do: AWAKE provides educational programming and creates a unique community that helps early to mid-career professional women: (i) develop the skills necessary to succeed as leaders in their professions and in the broader community (ii) use and develop shared knowledge among like-minded women; and (iii) cross-promote and network with other professional women through events and activities

FIRST Chesapeake / VirginiaFIRST

FIRST Chesapeake Mission: The mission of FIRST Chesapeake (dba VirginiaFIRST) is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. It is our vision to make FIRST STEM-based leadership programs a reality for every young person in the DC/ MD/ VA area. FIRST Chesapeake administers FIRST (For Inspiration of Science and Technology) programs to middle and high school students in Virginia, and to high school students in Maryland and DC. There are over 6,700 students on over 300 FIRST Chesapeake teams. These teams work together to build robots and compete in local arenas each year, with the involvement of over 650 mentors and coaches. FIRST Chesapeake works closely with it's elementary school partner, VA/DC FIRST LEGO League (http://va-dcfll.org/) to ensure a continuum of quality STEM-based leadership programs from kindergarten through 12th grade.
