O Instituto de Pesos e Medidas do Estado de São Paulo - Ipem-SP foi criado em 24 de abril de 1967, por meio do Decreto Estadual 47.927. Em 1995, por meio da Lei 9.286 de 22/12/95, foi transformado em Autarquia Estadual vinculada à Secretaria da Justiça e da Defesa da Cidadania do Governo do Estado de São Paulo. Mediante convênio com o Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Qualidade e Tecnologia - INMETRO, o Ipem-SP executa serviços essenciais na proteção ao cidadão em suas relações de consumo exercendo, no âmbito do Estado, a verificação e a fiscalização de: • instrumentos de medição (e medidas materializadas); • produtos pré-medidos; • produtos têxteis; • produtos com certificação compulsória; • veículos transportadores de produtos perigosos e de GLP fracionado. Para cumprir suas atribuições, o Ipem-SP dispõe de: • Sede Administrativa; • Fiscalização da Capital e Grande São Paulo; • 13 Delegacias de Ação Regional no interior do Estado; • 8 laboratórios para verificação de produtos pré-medidos; • 4 postos fixos para verificação volumétrica de caminhões-tanque; • posto fixo para verificação volumétrica de vagão-tanque; e • posto fixo para verificação de taxímetros, na Capital. O Ipem-SP dispõe também de um Centro Tecnológico para prestar serviços de calibração de padrões metrológicos e instrumentos de medição.
