Cool-X LLC is a start-up with offices in MA and MI that has developed new, proprietary nanotechnology that improves oil performance. Cool-X is a semifinalist in the 2012 Cleantech Open, a national competition and accelerator for leading cleantech technology start-ups. Cool-X sells nanofluid oil additives that reduce heat and friction and improve fuel economy and energy efficiency in motors, transmissions, gearboxes, and hydraulic systems. Cool-X oil additives add carbon nanoparticles to oil in a stable colloidal suspension, and these nanoparticles improve the heat transfer and thermal conductivity of oils, by increasing the speed that heat moves through the oil and into metal surfaces through convection. Cool-X has been shown to reduce oil temperatures in engines and gearboxes by 10-30F, which prevents breakdowns, reduces wear, and prolongs oil life. Oil with Cool-X in it typically lasts twice as long with significantly better performance, as the additive packages are protected from excess heat. Cool-X additives also burnish at a nano scale. Cool-X nanoparticles smooth surfaces, improving surface finish, preventing the build up of oxidation byproducts, and reducing friction over time. Cool-X has been shown to improve fuel economy in Class 8 trucks by 5% in a fleet test of 26 vehicles driven over 2 million miles.
